April 25, 2022
National Volunteer Week runs from April 24 to 30 this year and provides the opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers across Canada.
This year’s theme is “Volunteering Is Empathy in Action”, and this sentiment could not ring truer for volunteers in the long-term care sector. Over my 20+ years working in long term care, I have seen daily examples of volunteers in homes displaying unmatched levels of empathy, kindness, dedication, and work ethic – even on the toughest days.
In our homes, volunteers play an essential role in maintaining a comfortable environment, and bring a broader sense of community to the residents and their family members surrounding the home. From visiting with residents, to assisting with mealtimes, to running recreation programs and sharing their skills in performing, arts and crafts and gardening, there is no doubt that the lives of those in long-term care have been enriched by the efforts of volunteers across the country.
Across Canada, volunteers create more caring, connected and compassionate communities. It has been a privilege to work with and learn from the volunteers who contribute so much to the daily lives of those who live in our homes.
On behalf of the Canadian Association for Long Term Care, I offer my sincerest thanks for all that you have done, and continue to do, for everyone living in long-term care across the country.
Sincerely,
Jodi Hall
